Genetics & Lifestyle

With the spotlight on genetics in modern medicine, there are many tests consumers can buy direct. But what does it all mean? With DNALife testing we do the work for you, and provide bespoke nutrition and lifestyle advice so your genes can work in your best health interest.

Laboratory testing: DNALife series

DNA testing and nutrigenomics are the future of individualised healthcare. Although reliable genetic testing is readily available for clinical use, genetics is still a relatively new clinical tool. Until recently, healthcare practitioners have been left to educate themselves in this exciting area of clinical science, by simply picking up information where they can.

Nordic Laboratories and DNAlysis Biotechnology, both promotors of individualised medicine, created dnalife. Equipped with the most up-to-date DNA tests, dnalife is dedicated to providing healthcare practitioners with training and education to accurately and usefully interpret genetic results. DNAlysis places emphasis on the inter-relationship between genes, nutrition and lifestyle, and as such provides a valuable tool for the management of health and wellness.

As a DNALife certified practitioner Adele uses only genetic testing that focuses on genes shown to respond to positive lifestyle and dietary ‘messaging’. Food and lifestyle habits provide information to our genes, termed ‘epi’genetics. It is at the level of epigenetics that health empowerment and transformation can take place, where it is possible to change the action of a body process by simply changing something in your diet or better managing your stress levels. Good nutrition, daily movement, adequate rest and a balanced emotional state / peace of mind is powerful, positive information to our genes and all things that WE CAN control.

DNA Sport

The DNA Sport genetic test includes 13 gene variations associated with power and endurance. Genes have now been coded and studied that can tell whether an individual is best suited to power or endurance-based activities and how quickly they’re likely to recover from training sessions. Some are better suited to running marathons, while others can cover 100m extremely quickly or lift heavy weights over their heads with apparent ease. How successful they become in their chosen sport, or how quickly they gain results from engaging in recreational training to keep fit, is to a large degree determined by genetic makeup. We all have the potential to attain more success in one sporting event compared to another – it’s just a case of finding out which one. With the results from this test, training potential is wholly in the hands of the individual, who can train to maximise power or endurance capability. The results also tell us about susceptibility for picking up tendon and other soft tissue injuries. Next to the explanation of what a gene variant means are specific dietary and training recommendations, where appropriate, based on results. General training advice follows the full report as a guide to specific types of activities. The DNA Sport report summary can help a PT and client focus particular attention on those areas where a different training path from the one currently on may need to be followed to compensate for a specific genetic variation. We understand many people struggle to implement new nutritional and lifestyle behaviours they know could help them. The DNA Sport summary report will help identify which behavioural changes really can’t be ignored to maximise performance potential from chosen training activities.

DNA Health

DNA Health looks at 8 essential processes in the body, and identifies gene variations that reduce the efficiency of these processes. These variations are key, as they are known to influence long‐term health or well being. They also affect risk of developing chronic, degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart (cardiovascular) disease, diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. The good news is that even the World Health Organization (WHO) agrees that over 60% of this disease burden is preventable by nutrition and lifestyle modification. Even better news is that this kind of modification is completely under an individual’s control if they are aware of the genetic variations they are carrying. That’s why the most exciting aspect of targeted gene sequencing like DNA Health is that it allows changes to diet and lifestyle that are most likely to help a person live a long, healthy and happy life to be prioritised.

DNA Diet

DNA Diet includes analysis of variations in 13 genes involved in fat absorption and metabolism, insulin resistance, regulation of appetite and energy intake, as well as an individual’s exercise response to weight management, circadian rhythm and how this affects hunger and satiety regulation. The report also offers information about potential for chronic inflammation, which underpins major chronic diseases from heart disease and cancer, to type-2 diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s disease.  Information is provided on what a gene variant means for an individual, as well as customised dietary and lifestyle recommendations based on results. This also includes suggested forms of physical activity to mobilise fat stores for optimal weight management.
